FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (July 3, 2012) -- Celebrate our nation's independence with the men and women who defend it.
Fort Meade's annual Fourth of July celebration is open to the public and starts at noon at McGlachlin Parade Field. The event will feature music, food vendors, games, rides, inflatables and fireworks, which are scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m.
In the event of extreme inclement weather, fireworks will take place on Thursday at 9:30 p.m.
Children's rides are free beginning at noon on Wednesday.
Baltimore radio station Mix 106.5 will broadcast live until 3 p.m. A DJ will perform from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. The band "New Monopoly" will perform from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase by a variety of vendors. Commemorative t-shirts can be purchased for $10 cash at the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation's information tent.
The Public Affairs Office will be make customized SoundOff covers at the gazebo starting at 2 p.m. The covers will be available for download from Fort Meade's Facebook page at facebook.com/ftmeade by Monday. Social media users are encouraged to upload their own photos to the Facebook page and tweet with the hashtag #FtMeade4th.
Visitors should enter through the Rockenbach Road, Mapes Road and State Route 32, or Reece Road gates, and be prepared to present a valid government ID. All vehicles are subject to random inspection.
Parking will be available at the Defense Information Systems Agency, buildings 4707 and 4709, Exchange, commissary and Club Meade. Handicapped parking will be available near First Army Division East.
Multiple roads will close by 9 p.m. for the fireworks display and controlled outbound traffic.
Drivers will be required to follow designed exit routes: DISA and buildings 4707 and 4709 will use Cooper Avenue to the Rockenbach Gate. The Exchange parking lot will use Reece Road to exit through the Reece Gate. The Commissary parking lot will use Mapes Road to exit through the Mapes and State Route 175 Gate. Club Meade parking will use Mapes Road to exit through the State Route 32 and Mapes Gate.
The heat index is forecasted to exceed 100 degrees. Drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and salt. Wear loose, light-colored clothing.
Sunscreen and inspect repellant also are recommended.
Pets, fireworks, sparklers, glass bottles and grills are prohibited.
