FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Fort Leonard Wood received a 2011 Acknowledgement Prize for Sustainable Development from the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Development.

The Corps of Engineers and Fort Leonard Wood competed against more than 6,000 entries worldwide and received the award for the case study, Energy, Water and Waste Efficient Military Installation.

The Corps of Engineers created the case study and led the development of an Integrated Living Community pilot project, which focused on diversification considerations for sustainable energy and water supply as well as waste management systems here at Fort Leonard Wood.

According to Fort Leonard Wood Master Planner Bryan Parker, Fort Leonard Wood will incorporate the best features of this project into the Installation's Strategic Sustainability Plan. This strategic plan serves as the road map to continually adapting and improving the installation support systems to meet the demands of the future.

"It's great that Fort Leonard Wood was selected for this award, and I'm honored to have been a small part of the effort," Parker said. "It's really exciting that the installation is working to become more energy efficient and sustainable.

The primary objective of the Holcim Foundation is non-commercial promotion and development of sustainable construction at national, regional and global levels.
