FORT RILEY, Kan. - Katie Fornes and her 3-year-old daughter, Allison, took advantage of the Post Library's Thanksgiving craft event Nov. 20 as a mother-daughter date.

"We were going to have some one-on-one time and do some activities together, just the two of us with the older sibling gone," Fornes said.

Crafts included coloring a turkey picture and making a wreath by tracing each child's hands.

The Fornes Family moved to Fort Riley a month ago. This was the first event they participated in at the library.

"We haven't been here very long ... but we've always done library story time at all of our posts, so it will become part of our regular routine. The kids love it, so we enjoy coming," Fornes said.

The event brought out more children than the library staff had anticipated, with 35 children, along with their parents, attending.

"(It was) something to do. (It) seemed fun," said parent Lucy Brown.

Library clerk Danielle Goguen didn't let the outstanding numbers overwhelm her. With the help of other staff members, more coloring sheets were printed and crayons and colored pencils were found.

Another table was set up to accommodate the more than normal group of children taking advantage of the warm library, away from the cold and dreary weather outdoors.

"It's a wonderful event. I love working with kids," Gorguen said. "The kids love it, I love doing it, and you get great art work for your house."

The next holiday-themed story time with crafts will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 18. Santa is expected to make an appearance as well.

Library hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call 785-239-5305.
