Redstone Arsenal became one of three installations to house an Army Command when Army Materiel Command cut the ribbon on its headquarters in 2011. This week, the installation will farewell the first AMC commander to serve his entire tenure at the command's new home.
After a 36-year career in the Army, Gen. Dennis L. Via will pass the AMC colors to Lt. Gen. Gustave Perna, who will be promoted to the rank of general prior to the change of command, on the AMC Parade Field, Sept. 30.
The four-star farewell marks the end of Via's four years commanding AMC.
During those years, the command supported several essential Army missions, including the retrograde of equipment out of Afghanistan, development and drawing of regionally positioned Activity Sets, destruction of Syrian chemical weapons, and the fight against the Ebola epidemic.
Perna returns to AMC after serving as the Army Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4 (logistics). He served previously as AMC's deputy chief of staff for G-3/4 (operations and logistics).
