CERKLJE OB KRKI, Slovenia- Medical Personnel from the 86th Medical Group, stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany; C Co., 173rd Brigade Support Battalion (Airborne); and members of the armed forces of Slovenia,Kosovo and Macedonia intensified their emergency trauma care practices together as one team during Exercise Immediate Response 16.
Immediate Response 16 is a multinational, brigade-level command post exercise utilizing computer-assisted simulations and field training exercises spanning two countries, Croatia and Slovenia.
"This a good glimpse into how other NATO countries operate and how easily it is to integrate and work together, with other militaries," Sgt. David Willnough, a medic and squad leader from Charlie Company, 173rd Brigade Support Battalion (Airborne). "We operate a bit differently but we can always adapt and this helps broaden our horizons and learn to be more flexible."
The facility this particular training was conducted in is called Role 2. Role 1 is essentially a treatment bay and evacuation area, whereas Role 2 normally consists of a two treatment base, with medical providers, able to hold from 10 patients up to 20 for up to 72 hours. Role 2 also has lab and physical capabilities such as dental and behavioral stress control.
"We train on this regularly to be certified once every three years, for IR16 we are also demonstrating to our allies in a quick response fashion," U.S. Air Force Col. Michael Roberts, commander of the expeditionary medical support facility said.
What is different in this particular scenario, Roberts explained, is that usually the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army will train at different sites, and then only did they incorporate the two but then additionally combine practice with medical professionals from Slovenia, Macedonia and Kosovo all as a singular team.
"We are looking to share our experiences, demonstrate what we do, see what our allies do and see if there are opportunities to link up and synergies if we every had to do this from a disaster response, humanitarian response issue, we could actually participate and respond together," Roberts said.
The exercises and simulations of Immediate Response are built upon a decisive action based scenario and are designed to enhance regional stability, strengthen allied and partner nation capacity, and improve interoperability among partner nations. The annual exercise occurs Sept., includes more than 1,900 Soldiers and security forces from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Immediate Response 16 supports the goal of a "Strong Europe" in that militaries and security forces are trained and ready to combine forces to ensure unified security across allied and partner nations. Immediate Response is a preplanned exercise that has occurred annually for the past six years.
