FORT BENNING, Ga., (March 23 2016) -- "My name is Eric Wesley and I am a combined arms maneuver Soldier. Smart, fast, lethal and precise," said Brig. Gen. Eric Wesley as he introduced himself to the audience while paying homage to his predecessor's priorities of a smarter, faster, more lethal and precise Army.
Wesley assumed command of the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning from Maj. Gen. Scott Miller, during a change of command ceremony at 10 a.m. March 18.
Wesley spoke about the gravity of what this assignment means to him.
"History tells us, precedent tells us, that there will be another war. And when that war comes, the Department of Defense, the DOD, will be at the center of gravity. In the center of gravity of the DOD is the United States Army, because we know that the Army fights and wins our nation's wars," Wesley said.
Wesley said to take it a step further and think about what the center of gravity is for the Army: the combat arms of Infantry and Armor.
"And what's at the center of gravity of Infantry and Armor? Well, that's the MCoE. So you've got this picture of this future war that I just described, and what you need to know is that for this future war, the center of gravity of our nation is a group of people who are currently, quietly, diligently and professionally preparing our nation for the next war, and that's at this place, and it's you," said Wesley.
Wesley also spoke of his respect for Miller, saying that Miller is leaving big shoes to fill.
"General Miller is one of the finest gentlemen I know in the Army. He is not only a fine gentleman but he is also a renowned war hero. He is a true warrior, and he has served in all of the conflicts in the last 20, 30 years. I have great respect for him. He has been a great mentor of mine," said Wesley.
Wesley's most recent assignment was at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. as the deputy director, Program Analysis and Evaluation, G-8.
Wesley is a 1986 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Wesley's education included a Master of Science degree in International Relations from Troy University. His military schooling includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, the Armor Officer Advanced Course, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and National War College, where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
