Wagner's thoughts on Leadership

Learn that the best ideas are not often your own - become an advocate for those ideas and help carry them forward. The way we change, for the better, is to embrace the best ideas and give them momentum by carrying them forward into execution.

People do not come to work wanting to do a bad job. They want to do good work and want it to be noticed. We must do everything we can to enable and recognize that.

Find balance. Do not let your career consume you. Find time for family, friends, and community. It is not only important because it ensures that your home life is as successful as your work life; it also maintains your health, mental acuity, and drive. When one side of the equation is out of balance, both sides suffer.

Remember the people around you. Their success is your success. Develop them as you develop yourself. Recognize them as you want to be recognized - be an example of what you want others to be. Leaders at all levels are examples. Not only does your team pick up on your attitudes and mannerisms, but they will find importance in what you find important for yourself.

Finally, always recognize that you will fail along the way. It will happen more than you think. Failing at a given problem is not failing at your growth or your career. Strong leaders accept their failures, learn from them, and bounce back. Do not let failure diminish your motivation and commitment to excellence. Don't give up - press on and learn from it.

Wagner's Goals

At this point in my career, most of my goals are more personal than career-oriented. I am more focused on what I can do within my organization and community to improve what is around us, than I am focused on attaining the next step up. I also enjoy helping others find their own growth potential - whether it is in education, experience, or leadership.
