ANSBACH, Germany (Feb. 27, 2015) -- U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach's Religious Support Office, working with local veterans, held a service Feb. 19 for the four chaplains who gave their lives and saved others when their ship sank after being struck by a torpedo from a German U-boat Feb. 3, 1943.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, in concert with the USAG Ansbach RSO, hold a memorial service each year to remember the chaplains' selfless acts and remind others of their courage in the face of adversity.
The four U.S. Army chaplains were: Lt. John P. Washington, a Roman Catholic priest; Lt. George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, a Jewish rabbi; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed Church pastor.
