WASHINGTON (Sept. 18, 2014) -- The recently elected President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, Va., during his visit to the United States.

Poroshenko was accompanied by Maj. Gen. Laura J. Richardson, Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Army for Legislative Affairs for Headquarters, Department of the Army during the Armed Forces Full Honors Wreath Laying ceremony.

Following the ceremony Poroshenko received a tour of the Memorial Amphitheater Display Room and presented Jack E. Lechner, Superintendent, Arlington National Cemetery, with a token of gratitude from the Ukrainian people, honoring the sacrifice of America's heroes.

Earlier in the day, Poroshenko, who assumed office in June, met with U.S. President Barack Obama to discuss efforts to pursue a diplomatic solution regarding the crisis facing Ukraine and addressed a joint session of Congress.

Prior to his arrival in America, Poroshenko visited Ottawa and met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
