ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala.-The depot was awarded the Army Superior Unit Award during a June 23 ceremony for the depot's performance in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Maj. Gen. Scott West, commanding general of TACOM Life Cycle Management Command, presented the award, which covers the period Sept. 11, 2001 through Sept. 30, 2006, to Col. S. B. Keller, depot commander.

The ceremony was part of the general's two-day visit to Anniston.

Anniston's workforce provided timely and unconditional support to America's military forces, both at home and in Southwest Asia, according to the announcement citation. Volunteers from the depot were in Kuwait and Iraq before the onset of hostilities, working side-by-side with the Soldiers.

"In this Global War on Terrorism, what's important is the work that you are doing right here at Anniston," West told the crowd of more than 300 employees. "We're an Army that prides ourselves in supporting Army operations around the world."

In addition to installing up-armor kits on vulnerable vehicles, depot employees also provided general and preventative maintenance on combat vehicles and repaired and rebuilt sub-assemblies and components.

This decoration is awarded in peacetime to any unit of the Army which displays outstanding meritorious performance of a difficult or challenging mission carried out under extraordinary circumstances.

Created in 1985, the award, which is one of the Army's highest unit awards, consists of a streamer for the installation's colors, a certificate and citation. Soldiers assigned to the depot during the entire period may wear the award ribbon permanently while Department of Defense civilians assigned to the depot during that timeframe may wear an award lapel pin.
