FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Freshly poured, smoothed out, dried concrete has been formed into a skater's dream behind the Cleland Ice and Inline Skating Rink on Fort Bragg.
The skating rink is adding a new skateboard park to their facility, which currently offers both ice and inline skating year round.
"We are looking forward to expanding our facility to include a wider range of interests," said Liz Egetoe, ice skating director.
Construction has been underway for about six months and is almost complete. Currently they are waiting for the safety inspections in order to ensure compliance with Fort Bragg's construction safety standards.
"I have been watching the construction of the skateboard area right after Halloween. I remember seeing them digging the holes and pouring the concrete and thinking how much fun I am going to have," said Jimmy Davis, a local skateboarder and a student at Fayetteville Technical Community College.
The skating rink is planning to open the skateboard portion of the facility sometime in the spring, but in the meantime, invites the public to skate on their inline skating rink that has been open since 2010.
"I'm excited that Fort Bragg is finally building a skateboard park. Right now the only place that I can skateboard is in parking lots and behind buildings and that's not always safe," said Davis.
In order to use the skateboard park, the use of a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads will be required. The requirement is the same when using the inline skating rink.
"We are excited to help positively affect the morale of the Soldiers and their Families on Fort Bragg," said Egetoe.
