Area School Enjoys Outing to Bowling Center
March 27, 2009
Fort Lee, Va. (March 26, 2009) -- Students from David A. Harrison Elementary School of Prince George recently visited the Fort Lee Bowling Center during a class field trip. The trip was planned as a means to educate children on the importance of proper manners.
Early childhood special education teachers Amber Wright and Beth Evans said their students take part in bowling as a means to "further develop manners, motor and turn-taking skills." It also encourages independence among the students.
"We chose to come to Fort Lee because it is a safe, clean and a smoke-free environment, and it is a change in routine. We have a great time," said Evans.
The trip to the Bowling Center is one of many field trips that the students will attend during the school year.
"We try to take the students on a field trip at least once every other month. This is an opportunity to utilize community resources," she said.
This was the first time that this group has visited the Bowling Center on a class outing. Among the 15 students that participated in this bowling event, two are military Family members.
Although not open to the general public, the Fort Lee Bowling Center is still considered a community resource as many Fort Lee military children attend area schools.
"There is a substantial presence of military children in public schools," said Chip Wikan, bowling center manager. "Commitment to the military community is very serious, and it's our reason for being here."
While the Bowling Center does not solicit business from the general public, the community can visit if they are invited by members of the military, Family members, Department of Defense Civilians, retiree or sponsored groups.
The Bowling Center is part of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. The FMWR is a comprehensive network of support and leisure services designed to enhance the lives of Soldiers (active, Reserve, and Guard), their families, Civilian employees, military retirees and other eligible participants.
