LABOR DAY SAFETY MESSAGE

Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the end of the Summer Season and many Americans take this opportunity to travel and enjoy the last long weekend of summer. This year, the American Automobile Association, AAA, is predicting almost 35 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home. This is the highest volume of travel for the holiday since 2008 and a 1.3 percent increase over the previous year. Last year in Arizona there were eight fatal vehicle accidents during the holiday weekend. Over the past five years there has been an average of 10 people killed on the road in Arizona every Labor Day.

This increase in travel highlights the need to be safe. Visible leader involvement always makes a difference in reducing accidents. Identify high risk personnel and talk with them before they depart for the long weekend. Talk to them about the dangers of careless or impaired driving, driving at excessive speeds, failure to use seatbelts in cars, and failure to use personal protective equipment on motorcycles. Most importantly, set a good example by doing the right thing on and off duty.

Enjoy the last summer holiday weekend and take the necessary precautions to ensure all of our personnel return safely. Thank you for your service.

Always Out Front! Army StronG
