Memorial Day is a time of reflection, a time to remember the sacrifices of those who have come before us and to honor all of the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our nation and values. I need your support in making this solemn holiday a time to pay tribute to our fallen comrades, while also ensuring that we do not lose a single Soldier, Family member, or Civilian employee to a preventable accident.

Memorial Day also places us at the start of the summer season, which poses new challenges for leaders. The USARPAC theater has some of the most diverse and pristine environments in the world, and commanders must ensure that our personnel are aware of, and prepared for, the increased risks associated with the season. I encourage everyone to check out the Army's Summer Safety resources available at: https://safety.army.mil/multimedia/CAMPAIGNSINITIATIVES/KnowtheSigns/SummerSafety2013/tabid/2409/Default.aspx

Off-duty accidents continue to be our top concern, and we have already lost 4 USARPAC Soldiers to preventable off-duty accidents during FY14! To address this serious issue, the Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center has developed a tailorable presentation to assist commanders with increasing off-duty safety awareness. I encourage every commander to review and use the materials at: https://safety.army.mil/ODSAP

Remember, it takes engaged leadership, discipline, and teamwork to ensure everyone in USARPAC stays safe this summer. We all need to do our part to reduce preventable accidents, but I expect all leaders to take the extra steps necessary to make sure our team stays safe!

ONE TEAM!
