WARRIOR BASE, Republic of Korea -- Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company USAG Yongsan participated in pop-up target marksmanship training at Warrior Base New Mexico range to increase weapons proficiency for their wartime mission, Oct. 8.

HHC has typically in the past used paper targets for marksmanship training to prepare for their base defense mission. This pop-up target training event, which is more similar to real wartime shooting, is the first time under the leadership of Capt. Vladislav Silayev, commander for HHC USAG Yongsan, that the unit has conducted this type of training.

"This year, we decided to give the soldiers exposure to something different. Typically pop-up targets are bit more challenging because there is a time limit," Silayev said. "The training gives them more value because it is more difficult than usual, and it makes them have to react quicker. Anytime you have to go through training that is challenging, it will make you better."

Some soldiers found the training unfamiliar and made clumsy mistakes at first, but they were able to shoot down the green targets located at 50 to 250 meter away as they become more accustomed to the settings.

"I haven't done popup target since I did it during my basic training which is about 15 months ago," said Cpl. Lee Chang-hyun, a USAG Yongsan administrative specialist for ROKA Staff Office. "I honestly forgot the feeling of it, but through today's training, I was able to gain it back, and I feel more confident. I think we should have training like this more often so everyone can maintain his/her readiness."
