WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 2, 2013) -- An Army lieutenant colonel has been identified as "one to watch" among information technology professionals by CIO magazine.
Lt. Col. Bobby Saxon, Army G-3/5/7, and division chief of the Enterprise Management Decision Support system was named one of the recipients of the 2013 CIO Ones to Watch Awards by the magazine's executive council.
The colonel is the first Army officer ever to have been chosen for the award. The honor is provided annually to "rising stars" in IT who bring leadership, innovation and value to their organization and who are "destined to become CIO's of the future."
"I am humbled to be selected for this honor and I owe a large measure of my success to the EMDS team and to the professionals who coached and mentored me over my career," Saxon said. "With their immense help, my quest to create innovative IT solutions to enhance the business of the organization has been a rewarding experience."
In being named for the award, Saxon joins a group of leaders representing Fortune 1000 and Fortune 500 corporations, federal, state, and local government organizations, and academic institutions.
"Bobby is uniquely qualified to lead high visibility, strategic IT initiatives," said John P. McLaurin III, deputy director, Department of Defense Force Management. "He is a talented leader and an experienced IT professional. This award is well deserved and highlights his unlimited potential as a future chief information officer."
Saxon's career with the Army spans nearly 30 years, and includes service in the active Army, Army Reserve and Georgia National Guard. He has supported the nation during both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and previously served as the Army's assistant deputy chief information officer. In the private sector, he founded and for 11 years operated a customer relationship management software and consulting business.
Saxon has overseen the EMDS project since 2010. The EMDS is a web-enabled, data-driven, dashboard system that retrieves disparate data from multiple data sources in near real-time. The EMDS provides Army leaders access to critical information such as unit readiness reports, personnel data, equipment status and training resources. The information can be used for predictive readiness, resources planning and forecasting.
The CIO Ones to Watch Awards were created in 2005 to honor the rising stars in IT -- the senior staff destined to become the CIOs of the future -- as identified and sponsored by the CIOs of today's leading organizations.
Each year, nominees are judged on their job history, job scope and on-the-job accomplishments by a panel of judges from the executive council at CIO magazine. Of those nominees, 20-25 are selected to receive the award.
This year's awardees will be honored at a ceremony May 7, at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, Boca Raton, Fl., during the annual CIO Magazine's Leadership Event.
