FORT MONROE, Va. (TRADOC News Service, May 7, 2010) - Lt. Gen. John E. "Jack" Sterling Jr. succeeded Lt. Gen. David P. Valcourt Monday as U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command's deputy commanding general /chief of staff.

Valcourt is retiring from the Army after 37 years' service. He was honored in a retirement ceremony here May 3.

"General Valcourt has been a great mentor for me," Sterling remarked. "When I think back on all the people that have been a part of my career - all the people that mentored and guided me who took a little bit of their time out - I would like to say thanks. And thanks to all the folks in TRADOC to make us feel at home."

Commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in 1976 after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy, Sterling has served in engineer leadership positions from platoon leader through brigade command in 1st Armored Division, 5th Infantry Division and 3rd Infantry Division.
