JOINT BASE DIX-MCGUIRE-LAKEHURST, N.J. (Army News Service, March 19, 2013) -- All-Army wrestlers won both the Greco-Roman and freestyle team titles at the 2013 Armed Forces Wrestling Championships, held March 16-17, at Joint Base Dix-McGuire-Lakehurst.
Two Soldiers from the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program won gold medals in both disciplines as All-Army went a perfect 6-0 in round-robin dual meets against teams from the runner-up All-Marine Corps, third-place All-Air Force and All-Navy.
Sgt. Nathan Engel successfully defended his Greco-Roman crown at 55 kilograms/121 pounds with three consecutive victories on Saturday, and repeated the feat Sunday with three freestyle victories. Spc. Justin Lester, a 2012 Olympian and two-time World bronze medalist, won the Greco and freestyle titles at 74 kilograms/163 pounds. Both wrestlers are stationed at Fort Carson, Colo.
Two-time Olympian Sgt. Spenser Mango, 60 kilos/132 pounds, and Pfc. Joseph Betterman, 66 kilos/145.5 pounds, also won gold for the Army, which defeated Air Force 26-1, Navy 24-6, and Marine Corps 14-13 in Greco-Roman.
Brothers Capt. William Simpson, 60 kilos/132 pounds, and Capt. Phillip Simpson, 66 kilos/145.5 pounds, along with Spc. Jack Jensen, 96 kilos/211.5 pounds, struck freestyle gold for the Army, which defeated Air Force 22-8, Navy 26-6, and Marine Corps 25-6.
Staff Sgt. Dave Arendt of Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., won the gold medal in both heavyweight divisions. He defeated silver medalist Army Pfc. Erik Nye, 1-1, 1-0, in Greco and 1-0, 1-0 in freestyle.
