YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- U.S. Military dependents, non-emergency essential Civilians and contractors took part in Courageous Channel 12, a mandatory noncombatant evacuation operation exercise here on garrison, May 17-19.

The NEO exercise, which is held annually in Korea, was conducted to brief and familiarize all non-Military personnel with procedures for evacuation from the peninsula during a crisis. Although this would most likely refer to a war time scenario with North Korea, it also includes all other emergencies such as weather related incidents.

"The intent is to make sure that not only Military personnel, but noncombatant evacuees as well, understand the procedures for evacuation, in order to make the process as smooth and quick as possible," said Col. William Bell, 524th Military Intelligence Battalion S3 Operations Officer.

Participants were directed through several NEO stations instructing them on matters including identification, medical, veterinarian, chemical masks and prohibited items. At each of the stations, Soldiers and Military personnel courteously gave guidance regarding each of the matters, such as how to properly don a chemical gas mask and how to receive a security search. In addition, participants had their NEO tracking system records reviewed and updated, and were checked for the possession of proper documents and any equipment that might be missing.

Throughout the entire process, Military personnel conducted themselves professionally, much to the comfort and satisfaction of the noncombatant evacuees.

"The exercise went very smoothly and the Soldiers were so professional and respectful," said Mary Soergel, Army wife. "The Soldiers were well-informed and articulate. Every time I asked a question, there was a clear answer."

Soergel explained how the process could be intimidating especially for non-Military personnel. She said, however, that with Courageous Channel 12, it left her feeling pretty good, and ready for any hostile incident.

"It felt like everything was under control," Soergol said. "I didn't feel anxious. Instead, it gave me a confidence and assurance that there is a good plan."
