CHAMBERSBURG, PA -- On Monday, March 12, 2012, Col. Anita Raines, United States Army Retired, became the first female Deputy to the Commander at Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD).
Raines spent her initial week training and in-processing, but eagerly anticipates getting into a normal routine. "I'm excited to be here and am looking forward to it," she said to a room full of Depot Directors.
Prior to assuming duties at Letterkenny, Raines was the Director, U.S. Army War College Support Branch, Center for Strategic Leadership, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.
Raines is a native of Doylestown, Pa., and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in April 1982. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Tulsa in 1985. She was Distinguished Military Graduate of the U.S. Army Reserve Officers Training Corps program, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Ordnance Corps. In 1995 she earned a Master of Science degree in Logistics Management from Florida Institute of Technology and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in 2008.
Raines began her military career at Fort Campbell, Ky., where she served as a Platoon Leader, Shop Officer and Armament Materiel Officer, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). In 1989 she was assigned as the 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized) Support Command S3 Plans Officer. In April 1990 she assumed command of the 556th Maintenance Company and deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Storm. Upon return to Fort Riley Kan., Raines assumed the duties as the 541st Maintenance Battalion S3 Operations Officer.
From 1993-1995 she served as the Ordnance Team Chief, Readiness Group Redstone in Redstone Arsenal, Ala. In December 1995, Raines was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C., where she served as the Battalion Support Operations Officer, 528th Special Operations Support Battalion (Airborne) and as the Logistics Operations Officer, U.S. Army Special Operations Support Command.
In June 1999, Raines assumed her duties as the Battalion Executive Officer, 2d Forward Support Battalion, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 2d Infantry Division, Republic of Korea.
After returning to the U.S. in the summer of 2000, Raines was assigned to the Headquarters Department of the Army, Pentagon, Washington, D.C., where she served as the Assistant Executive Officer and Military Assistant to the ADCS, Army G4, and as the Officer in Charge of the Army G4 agency recovery operations after the terrorist attack on the Pentagon during Operation Noble Eagle.
In February 2003 she was assigned to the 1st Corps Support Command, Fort Bragg N.C., where she served as the Battalion Commander, 189th Corps Support Battalion (Airborne) and led over 1,200 Soldiers through two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After battalion command, Raines served as the Logistics Services Division Chief, Directorate for Logistics, J-4, The Joint Staff, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. and as the Military Deputy in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Logistics & Materiel Readiness), Pentagon.
Raines is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ordnance Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Jumpmaster Course, Support Operations Course, Logistics Executive Development Course, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College.
Her military awards include: Defense Superior Service Medal (w/Oak Leaf Cluster), Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (w/ 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (w/3 OLCs), Army Commendation Medal (w/2 OLCs), Army Achievement Medal (w/2 OLCs), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Saudi Arabia Kuwait Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Overseas Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
She earned the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, the Army Staff Identification Badge, and the Thai Army Parachutist Badge.
Interviews for the Deputy to the Commander began in the middle of January with a panel of senior leaders from the Army Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command to include Depot Commander, Col. Cheri A. Provancha. After a few interviews Raines was chosen to become the senior civilian at the Depot.
"She is joining us after a very successful 29 year career in the U.S. Army as a logistician," Provancha said. "I am very excited to have her join the LEAD team and know that her wealth of experience is a fantastic addition to this great organization."
Raines joins the Depot during its 70th Anniversary, recognizing a legacy of superior equipment, dedication and support to the troops. The workforce strives to constantly improve and meet any challenge efficiently and effectively for generations to come.
