CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait -- Third Army held a Women's Equality Day celebration at the Zone One Chapel here Aug. 26. The event honored the 91st anniversary of the 19th amendment's ratification, which gave U.S. women the right to vote.

In 1971 the U.S. Congress designated Aug. 26 as Women's Equality Day. In celebration of this, Third Army Soldiers honored those courageous pioneers who diligently fought for women's equal right to vote.

"The fight for women's equality involved many unsung heroes who persevered great humility so we may now have this day of celebration," said Lt. Col. Cheryl D. Brady, Area Support Group-Kuwait, director of logistics and an El Dorado, Ark. native. "We will always remember the cost of service for those before us who fought for justice."

During the ceremony, Third Army servicemembers read poems and gave heartfelt speeches about the importance of voting, and remembered such individuals as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman and Susan B. Anthony; all of which helped pave the way for women's equal rights.

"The way to honor those and remember their legacy is by casting your vote," Brady added. "Every time we exercise our right to vote, we celebrate their legacy and build upon the endless possibilities that can be achieved; including living a life that will leave a lasting legacy."

Sgt. Tiffany Bannerman, 553rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, and a Queens N.Y. native, said she took great pride in attending the Women's Equality Day celebration.

"I think it's very important for everyone to remember the women who worked their way up the ranks while fighting such hard battles," Bannerman explained. "I recognize their importance every day. Women in the military are especially strong, more so now than ever, and we owe much of it to those before us who made it possible."

Third Army's commitment to the well-being of its troops remains a priority. Through morale-building events such as the Women's Equality Day celebration, Third Army is honoring those who helped pave the way for servicemembers, the strength of our nation.
