FORT STEWART, Ga. - Soldiers assigned to the 3rd Sustainment Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division gathered on Cottrell Field Aug. 23 to bid farewell to Col. Shawn M. Morrissey and welcome incoming commander Col. Joseph "Ron" Novack Jr.
Colonel Morrissey has commanded the 3rd Sustainment Bde., for the last three years.
"Today is a bittersweet day, as we bid farewell to a fantastic command team in [Col. and Mrs. Morrissey], and welcome a new command team," said Maj. Gen. Robert "Abe" Abrams, Third Infantry Division commander.
"I am overwhelmingly humbled to be joining you as your commander," said Col. Novack, who's last assignment was as a student at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University at Fort McNair, Wash., D.C. "I'd like to thank the Morrisseys for turning over to me the best sustainment brigade in the Army."
Colonel Novack's military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Aerial Delivery and Material Officer Course, Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder and Jumpmaster Courses just to name a few. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Management and holds an MBA from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an M.S. in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University.
"Colonel Novack is a battle tested and proven leader," said Maj. Gen. Abrams. "He is absolutely the right man for the job."
Colonel Novack said he sees his command style as similar to that of Col.Morrissey's.
"At the end we are going to produce Soldiers who are trained and ready to go for full spectrum operations when the Army calls us, and we are going to be able to perform anytime and anywhere," he said.
The 3rd Sustainment Brigade recently returned from a year-long deployment to Iraq and currently has units deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn, and currently has one battalion participating in a year-long Defense (CBRN) Response Force mission, and another taking part in the Global Response Force.
