PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - The Fort Ord Area Retiree Council and the United States Army Garrison, Presidio of Monterey are sponsoring Military Retiree Appreciation Day on Ord Military Community 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. June 11.

The annual community-outreach event for all U.S. military branches updates and informs attendees on subject involving retirement benefits. It will feature important information for military retirees, widows and widowers of retirees, and pre-retirees, as well as food, information booths, drawings for prizes and more.

Presidio of Monterey retirement services officer Fernando Casao said that the RAD is a way to connect with the retirees on retirement benefits and foster goodwill between the retiree and active-duty communities.

Casao said he also augments the Presidio of Monterey retirement services program by mailing newsletters that accompany the Department of the Army Retiree Newsletter "Army Echoes" with the California and Nevada area newsletter "The Advisor."

"We want to bond with heroes of the past generations, the legacy from past military services," Casao said, explaining the goal is to "bring the installation to them and thank them."

Casao said the retirement services program is something that is very important to him, not only professionally, but personally, as he also is a retired service member.

"Do I owe (retirees) the time and resources'" Casao asked. "Yes, they are all important, and if I am not an expert on the benefits and information that they need, I can point them in the right direction to get the services they need."

Scheduled speakers include retired Marine Lt. Col. Richard Novak, chairman of the Fort Ord Area Retiree Council; Col. Darcy A. Brewer, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Presidio of Monterey; Shary Farr, president of the Partners for Transitions; Stephen Jorgensen, assistant deputy secretary for Veterans Memorials and Cemeteries, California Department of Veterans Affairs; and retired Maj. Gen. William M. Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services.

The location for the event is General Stilwell Community Center, 4260 Gigling Road in Seaside, on the former Fort Ord. For more information, call toll-free 1-877-354-2634.
