FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Fort Rucker and Enterprise city officials invite community members to join them for their first National Night Out to promote crime awareness, Aug. 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Enterprise Recreational Park, off Highway 167 North.

Fort Rucker K-9, Community Police and Special Reaction Team members will be on hand to assist Wiregrass law enforcement officials in educating the public about crime prevention, said Peggy Contreras, Community Police supervisor.

Activities include child identification kits, self defense and K-9 demonstrations, neighborhood watch guides, car seat installation checks, face painting, helicopter and emergency vehicle static displays, live music and free food, said Rachel Davis, City of Enterprise special projects coordinator.

Similar activities have been held in other neighboring cities in years past, Contreras said, but Fort Rucker officials wanted to partner with Enterprise to continue to build community relationships.

"It's important because our children go to school in all the communities," she said. "Working with the local community is all about crime prevention. Our law enforcement is joining ranks with Enterprise, and we want to encourage our residents to come out and be part of the festivities. (People can) get to know the local law enforcement. Come out and have Family fun, a night of relaxing and a good time."

Police organized the local event, similar to activities held nationwide on the same night, in an effort "to get a better partnership between the police and the community," according to Steve Russell, Enterprise Police Department detective.

Crime awareness and prevention is "about taking ownership of your community and neighborhood," he said.
