The Harmony Church area of Fort Benning has changed a lot since the Armor barracks groundbreaking ceremony in February 2008. The area, then mostly trees, is almost ready for the 194th Armor Brigade, which conducts Armor one station unit training. The Armor School's move to Fort Benning is scheduled to be complete by Sept. 15, 2011.
As part of the transition, officials with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, Maneuver Center of Excellence, the Armor School and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers participated in a groundbreaking ceremony July 13 to mark the construction of the Chaffee Troop Store and Barber Shop.
The 5,000-square-foot facility will be ready for Soldiers in a year, said Marc Floyd, general manager of the Fort Benning Exchange.
With a $1.95 million price tag, AAFES wants to ensure it meets the needs of the Armor community on Harmony Church, Floyd told those who attended the ceremony.
COL Charles Durr, chief of staff for the Maneuver Center of Excellence, said Soldier quality of life would be enhanced because of the construction.
The store, named after Adna R. Chaffee, is another milestone in the journey of the Armor Center
from Fort Knox, Ky., to Fort Benning. Chaffee is considered the "Father of the Armored Force."
