Army to Muster Individual Ready Reserves Soldiers
At Manhattan VA Medical Center
U.S. Army Human Resources Command will conduct Readiness Musters for some 150 Individual Ready Reserve Soldiers at the Veteran's Affairs (VA) Medical Center Manhattan, 423 E. 23rd Street, New York, during the weekend 1-2 May.
The Army is conducting musters at several VA Medical Centers this year to expand the muster program to areas where there is no Reserve Center located in a central area. The Manhattan Medical Center is part of the New York Harbor Healthcare System.
The event will include a general briefing; vendor tables manned by representatives from VA, Veteran Service Organizations, the Department of Labor, NYS Division of Veteran Affairs, CUNY and many others; individual "stations" for the Soldiers to obtain needed medical and benefit services; and a Post-Deployment Health Reassessment to document health concerns, assessment and referrals.
A secondary benefit of conducting the muster at the VA facility is having VA counselors available to assist Soldiers who might need medical, counseling or other services offered through the VA for veterans. Many Soldiers leave active duty not knowing of the benefits available to them through the VA. This is an outstanding example of how the Army and VA are cooperating to ensure that the men and women who have defended our nation receive the services they have earned.
Musters help optimize the operational and strategic value of the IRR by improving individual readiness levels. Soldiers will meet with personnel and medical specialists, who will update their military records, present information on promotion and training opportunities, provide medical and dental screenings, and offer other services. The Readiness Muster is a one-day event for which soldiers are paid. Soldiers are not mobilized at musters.
A Soldier typically becomes a member of the IRR after completing a tour of duty as an Active, National Guard or Reserve Soldier. Soldiers may remain members of the IRR until their total military service obligation expires, or, in the case of officers, until they resign their commission.
This is one of 19 Readiness Musters being conducted between January and August this year across the United States and in Puerto Rico.
