Independence Day, celebrated each year on 4 July, is about more than just barbeques, fireworks, and trips to the beach or lake. It’s the cornerstone of American history, celebrating the birth of the United States as an independent nation, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and ultimately signifying our country’s struggle for freedom and self-determination.
For the U.S. Army, who played a pivotal role in securing the independence of the United States from British rule, while serving as the U.S. Continental Army, this day is also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless soldiers who fought for and maintained the liberties we all continue to enjoy. Without their heroism, bravery, and selflessness, our country would not be the independent nation it is today.
As Independence Day approaches, the Office of Enterprise Management (OEM) would like to take a moment to acknowledge the U.S. Army's role in securing our country’s freedom and honor their unwavering determination, strategic brilliance, and enduring spirit. From the formation of the Continental Army, to enduring the winters at Valley Forge, to their victorious battle at Yorktown, the soldiers who fought for freedom laid the groundwork for the United States' emergence as a sovereign nation.
If you are looking for ways to show your appreciation to the U.S. Army this Fourth of July, here are some events and activities happening around the Washington, DC metro region and around the country.
