Fort Knox, Ky. – As we celebrate Black History Month, we shine a light on the extraordinary contributions of our African American Soldiers. Their narratives, often overlooked, have fueled the progress of our nation.
First Sgt. April Beard, originally from Norfolk, Virginia, serves as a first sergeant at the Elizabethtown Recruiting Company.
To Beard, Black history holds a significant importance as it is a time to honor the achievements of African Americans who paved the way for individuals like herself.
Throughout Beard’s life, Command Sgt. Maj. Latosha Ravenell, former brigade command sergeant for the Marketing and Engagement Brigade, has been a pivotal mentor, providing invaluable insights and encouragement for her personal and professional growth. She sees her as the epitome of a servant leader who has helped her navigate challenges, set and achieve goals, and thrive in her profession.
Family has also played a crucial role in Beard’s development, with her mother and grandmother instilling values that shaped her into the person she is today.
“They taught me to be confident, resilient and always treat people the way you want to be treated,” Beard said. “I would not be the leader I am today without them.”
Despite being the only African American in her current position, Beard remains committed to being available and connecting with her teammates by using virtual platforms when physically unavailable.
“There are times where Black applicants want to speak with someone they can relate to,” Beard said. “The lack of African American representation can be a challenge at times, but where there is a will, there is a way.”
Beard aims to lead by example and be a role model for other Black Soldiers and Recruiters, maintaining professionalism and mentoring these individuals to navigate their careers successfully. She seeks to create an environment where African American Soldiers feel valued and respected.
“Soldiers are always watching what you do,” Beard said. “I love sharing my Army story and experiences as an African American serving in the Army for almost 20 years.”
