Martindale, TX - Eagle Scout Justin Brundin has been selected as the Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) Scout of the Year for 2008-2009. He is the son of retired Sergeant First Class Alec Brundin, who was assigned to the 410th Military Police Company and deployed to Iraq several times while at Fort Hood, TX. The primary reason for Justin's selection was his coordination of a series of blood drives in support of the military's blood program, the Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP), which were conducted at the Robertson Blood Center at Fort Hood.
He was sponsored by VFW Post 3413 in San Marcos, TX, near where the family resides. The VFW acknowledged the support of the ASBP for veterans and their families. Justin's actions were notable in that he continued to sponsor the blood drives after he earned his Eagle Scout badge in 2005 and even after his father retired in 2007. The family traveled all the way from their home in Martindale, back to Fort Hood, just to conduct the 2008 blood drive.
The award was announced in the Spring 2009 Texas VFW News magazine and will be presented during the State VFW Convention in Corpus Christi this June. As reported in the magazine "His efforts have had an impact well beyond his community and state as his efforts in raising over 140 units of blood have literally saved the lives of hundreds of combat wounded Soldiers on the battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan." Justin's entry will now compete at the national level for a $5000.00 scholarship.
