U.S. ARMY GARRISON - YONGSAN, KOREA -- Brian Allgood Army Community Hospital (BAACH) turned into "Winter Wonderland" Dec. 16 to spread holiday cheer and goodwill, inviting the children in the local community to participate.

The event was led by Col. Editha Ruiz, chief nursing officer and deputy commander for surgical services, and Command Sgt. Maj. Diahann White. Many Soldiers and civilian staff from BAACH gathered to share some holiday spirit with BAACH family members and children from a local orphanage.

Volunteers set the main hallway for the children to enjoy activities. Kids were invited to decorate cookies with icing and sprinkles. There were crayons and paper for the kids to doodle and color what they wish for holidays. Volunteers were on site to provide character balloons and paint children's faces with seasonal images.

A string band performed classic Christmas tunes, and a trio from the Department of Pastoral Care sang seasonal gospel songs for the audience, adding to the festive atmosphere.

While the children were enjoying their time in "Winter Wonderland," a siren went off outside the hospital. Instead of Rudolf in a sleigh, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and an elf rode a fire truck and waved at the children. The children ran out to meet the Santa who came to town a bit early at BAACH for a special time with local children.

The children from the local orphanage had the chance to meet and received presents from Santa. When offered a candy cane by a Santa's helper, one of the children gave the candy back to Santa wanting to share the candy. This gesture appeared to move many people's heart in the room.

"It was perfect time to reach out the local community. We want them to feel welcome and hope they know they are part of our community" Ruiz said. "I appreciate all of the Soldiers and civilian staff who volunteered for this community outreach event."

Other children also posed for photos with Santa and told him what they wanted for Christmas. After meeting with the Santa and his helpers, the hospital dining facility was filled with people enjoying their Christmas brunch. Meals were served by Nutrition Care Division led by Maj. Mary Johnson, the department chief.

"We enjoy sponsoring events like our 'Winter Wonderland,'" said Col. Erica Clarkson, hospital commander. "BAACH will always find opportunities to reach out to the local community to be a good neighbor."
