ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- After more than nine months of leadership education, 27 Department of the Army civilian employees in the Journey to Leadership program graduated during a ceremony June 8 in the Baylor Conference Room here.

The students had five weeks of classroom training, worked on real-world projects in teams, and completed several individual assignments, including senior leader interviews.

According to the JTL Tier II program description, the purpose of the program is "to train future leaders in a broad range of leadership competencies, to utilize/administer various leadership tools and techniques, and to enhance teaming and interpersonal skills."

"We learned how to find resources for whatever comes our way in the future," said Rebecca Jessen, contract management specialist, U.S. Army Contracting Command-Rock Island.

Jessen said JTL was not just helpful for learning about resourcing and building professional skills; it also helped her gain insight into her personal life as a new mother.

"I think what I will take the most from Journey to Leadership is a newfound appreciation for self-reflection," she said.

Lamont Watkins, a fellow student with the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, also said the JTL helped his personal and professional life.

"The Journey to Leadership program is not just a journey for organizational leadership" he said. "It's a journey for personal leadership.

"This program has helped me become a better father, a better spouse and a better friend."

The program includes a 20-work-day developmental assignment where students have the opportunity to work in places outside of their usual positions and stations.

"One of my favorite assignments was spending 20 days in Kuwait," said Kristi Francis, logistics management specialist intern, U.S. Army Sustainment Command. "I had the opportunity to get firsthand knowledge about the mission by meeting people who were executing the mission."

ASC runs the JTL program, which this year accepted students from the Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center, the Joint Munitions Command, ACC-RI, and the U.S. Army Garrison-Rock Island Arsenal. Students travel from around the world to complete the program.
