INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant participated in an Emergency Management and Emergency Medical Response exercise in conjunction with Centerra Fire and Security Group, LLC., here, March 9.

LifeFlight Eagle, Kansas City, Missouri, coordinated with the Centerra Fire and Security Group, Lake City Fire and Emergency Services, to provide emergency response training related to a life-threating medical scenario involving air ambulance transportation.

All emergency response personnel received awareness of the process and procedures involved in landing an air ambulance helicopter on the LCAAP helipad. Training included operations setup, scene size up, safety and security of landing zone and emergency shutdown procedures for the Bell 407 aircraft used in the training. The aircraft crew consisted of three personnel; a pilot, a registered nurse and a medic.

"LifeFlight's hands on training provided the tools necessary to establish and control a landing zone for aircraft in the event of a mass casualty incident or other incident requiring air ambulance transport," said Benjamin Morrow, Fire Chief, Centerra Group. "Additionally, knowledge was gained regarding aircraft safety during emergency loading operations as well as how to respond to aircraft emergencies."

The training exercise started with LifeFlight personnel arriving at LCAAP by ground vehicles. LCAAP Fire and Security then participated in a classroom training session with LifeFlight.

"During the classroom exercise, participants discussed how to select and operate a landing zone and land the aircraft with an emphasis on safety protocols and communications," said Kyle Strom, Security Manager, LCAAP.

Following the classroom training and the arrival of the air ambulance on the helipad, the field portion of the exercise involved the air craft crew providing instruction and familiarization with the aircraft's danger areas and loading procedures.
