Thunderbird Dining Facility getting new facelift

Fort Huachuca, Arizona -- The Thunderbird Dining Facility here is currently closed, but when it reopens in February, it will sport a fresh, new look.

According to Kendall Brown, Fort Huachuca Food Program manager, the facility is being modernized, a process that will occur in stages over the next one to two years. When the facility reopens after the current round of renovations are complete, users will not only notice a new paint job in multicolored tones, but will walk on a newly tiled floor instead of the old, laminated one.

Brown explained that a big part of the renovation is repair of the shifting beams supporting the floor of the 1970s-era building. During the process, the floor will also be re-levelled before the new tiles are installed. "The last time the building got new flooring was about 15 years ago," he said.

"We've already added new tables and chairs and eventually will add new, upgraded equipment over the next one to two years. It's a big process and a continuous job that will take place over time as the budget permits," Brown explained.

The current project will include new window dressings and artwork to freshen the look and make the dining experience more enjoyable for users.

While the target date for reopening is set for Feb. 11, the date could change. While the Thunderbird Dining Facility is closed, military authorized to use the facility are being fed at the Weinstein Dining Facility during its normal operating hours.

Brown explained that once the facility is reopened for business, diners should notice changes to the menu, as well. The plan is to add more healthful menu items. The dining facility staff is working with the dietician at the Quartermaster School in Fort Lee, Virginia, which has oversight of the Army food services program. Once the menu changes are approved, the new items will be added, Brown said.
