FORT BENNING, Ga., (Nov.18 2015) -- Playing with their best lineup for the first time all season, the Fort Benning men's softball team won the Fall League Championship series Nov. 10 defeating the Green Acres Baptist Church Redemption team.

The championship winner was determined by a best two out of three game series.

In game one, Fort Benning won with 23 runs over Redemption's 11 runs. Redemption started strong with five runs in the first inning, but Coach Sgt. Maj. Juan Burney, Maneuver Center of Excellence headquarters, said the third inning gave Fort Benning a solid lead with seven runs powered by two homeruns from Staff Sgt. Tyrell Sackett, 3rd Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment.

Game two tied the teams up as Redemption took an 18 to 2 win. Their team scored three runs in the first inning and five runs in the third inning. They kept putting runs on the board, earning another six runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth inning.

Burney said the third game "brought out the pride of Benning."

Fort Benning secured the championship win, having beat Redemption 21 to 16 in the final game.

"It was a great way to finish off the season," Burney said. "To see them come together like that to finish off the year was great."

The fall league started Aug. 18, and because of Soldiers PCSing or participating in the All-Army league, the team was mostly makeshift, which contributed to a fall record of 3-12.

"The fall league wasn't good," Burney said, noting he and player Staff Sgt. Guillermo Roman were away to coach the women's All-Army Team.

Burney said the 2016 year would be a rebuilding year for the team, with winter training beginning in December and the next season beginning in February.
