HINESVILLE, Ga. - Lt. Col. Scott Shaw, the commander of 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, and a color guard detail from his battalion, participated in a ceremony in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor at the American Legion in Hinesville, Ga., Dec. 6, 2014, the day before the 73rd anniversary of the event.
"Today we honor men and women who have seen the clear blue water of the bay at Pearl Harbor," said Shaw, in his address at the ceremony. "Men and women who remember all too well, a fractured piece in a savage war; men and women who were there on that Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941."
Shaw said it was an honor to speak in front of the group which had veterans from wars past and some family members of those who were serving at Pearl Harbor on the day of the infamous attacks.
"We must always honor those who have fought against the forces of tyranny," Shaw said. "We must remember and honor those who live with the reminders of what happened at Pearl Harbor, those who fought and those who survived that attack; those who recall the last moments of peace for America in 1941."
Shaw also mentioned the similarities in the nation's courage and attitude in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the attacks on 9/11.
"On Sept. 11 it was as if the spirit of one generation instinctively passed to another," Shaw said. "Perhaps what is most common about those two days is the uncommon valor of those who were there and their unbending will to turn tragedy into triumph, defeat into victory, and war into a lasting peace."
