A group of about 15 Soldiers from the Army Sustainment Command gathered in a conference room here, Jan. 31, to witness a father administer the oath of enlistment to his daughter.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Timothy Cox, a senior maintenance officer assigned to ASC, and his wife, Bren, looked into a television screen where their daughter, Spc. Alexandria Cox, looked back from across the Atlantic Ocean from a room in Wiesbaden, Germany.

"It's an honor to re-enlist anyone in the Army," he said, "but to be able to re-enlist your daughter, it's pretty cool."

The ceremony was made possible through the use of video teleconferencing.

The younger Cox joined the Army from Hawaii in August 2011 as a geospatial imagery analyst after sidestepping a couple years of prodding from her dad. Her first assignment brought her to Germany where she has served with the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade for the last thirty months.

"My dad had been trying to get me into the military ever since high school graduation in 2009," she said. "I was against it for my own rebellious teenage reasons, but came to realize that it was a smart choice and I was already familiar with certain aspects of the military."

"She's an independent girl," said Cox. "She ended up joining when the time was right for her."

When it came time for her to be sworn into the Army for the first time, she wanted her dad to do it. But, he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn with the 4th Infantry Division.

So, when it came time for her re-enlistment, there was no question in her mind where she was going to turn.

"I never gave it a second thought," she said. "I knew I had my choice in who did it, and my first thought was my dad. It meant a lot to me to have him do it."

Cox said this will probably be his last year in the Army, and he is proud to see his daughter follow in his footsteps.

"It's like passing the torch," said CW4 Cox. "Words can't express how proud we are."

"This was one of the most touching re-enlistments [I've seen]," said Sgt. 1st Class Stacey Everett, ASC career counselor. "You could see the love, respect, honor that CW4 Cox and his wife had for their daughter and how much joy this brought to them as parents."

Cox re-enlisted for stabilization in Germany. She has added three more years to her original three-year contract.
