FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Sierra seemed a bit unsure about leaping into the water Saturday as her "brother," Garrett Single, tried to coax her into the pool.

"This is her first time in the water besides the time she leapt into the bathtub (with Garrett)," said Michelle Single, Garrett's mother and Sierra's owner.

After a couple attempts at leaping from the pool's edge, Sierra, a 1-year-old golden retriever, opted to go down the ramp into the water as other pups and humans splashed and swam around her.

Saturday marked Fort Carson's annual Doggie Day at the Outdoor Pool and the official closing of the outdoor swim season.

"We host this event to invite all dogs to come relax in the pool for the last hours of operation of the summer season," said Jennifer Pearson, aquatics manager.

Pearson said 120 pups and 360 Family members attended the event.

"This is great," said Air Force Staff Sgt. Tina Miller, 2nd Space Operations Squadron, Schriever Air Force Base.

Miller brought her 4-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, Troop, to the pool for the final swim.

"This is his first time. He's definitely having a good time," she said. "He's not so nervous about jumping in."

While some canines leapt into the water without a second thought, others were cautious.

Buttermilk, an 8-month-old golden retriever, needed a little push from her owners to flop into the water.

"This is her first pool day," said Rheta O'Connor, Family member. "She seems to be having a good time. She's never been around this many dogs."

Stephanie Uehlein played tug-of-war with her 12-week-old Chesapeake Bay pup, Phelps.

"We named him after the swimmer," she said.

Each year, Fort Carson hosts the event to allow Families an opportunity to bond with their four-legged members.

"I think this is fantastic," said Spc. Nathan Tobin, 52nd Engineer Battalion, and lifeguard. "It's the end of the season and we're not using the pool anymore. You can't do something like this normally."
