CAMP HUMPHREYS -- The Camp Humphreys Earth Day Celebration is scheduled for April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Transformation Park.
Earth Day is meant to increase awareness and appreciation of Earth's natural environment. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries.
At Camp Humphreys, there are several activities scheduled in celebration of the day. There will be video recording of individual pledges and best management practices. A drawing will be held for two free garden plots. There will be a hazardous materials and waste amnesty collection, where items such as used alkaline batteries can be turned in.
Microscopes and fossil finders will be on hand to encourage children to develop an understanding and appreciation of Earth science. A contest will be held for best homemade craft made with recyclable materials. Another contest will judge the best environmental or nature photo and there will also be an environmental trivial wheel, with prizes being doled out for correct answers.
The United States Army Garrison Humphreys Boy Scouts will sponsor the Leave No Trace project, while the Girl Scouts and Outdoor Recreation will host an arts and crafts project. A clay leaf project is being sponsored by Humphreys Arts and Crafts.
Plenty of food arrangements have been made as well. USO will be serving free hot dogs, drinks, and chicken-on-a-stick. The Exchange Main Store will provide the first 25 shoppers with a free recycle bag and a 15 percent discount off the purchase of Exchange reusable cloth shopping bags.
There will also be $1 off combo meals, 25 percent off kids' meals, and a total of $120 in gift cards for the Earth Day Photo Contest.
The food court will support the Arts for the Earth Day contest by giving the first 20 participants a kids' meal and all participants will receive a free drink. Also, the Defense Commissary Agency booth will provide water, fruit and vegetable trays, green products, bags giveaways, and environmental pamphlets.
The movie "Earth" will be shown at the Post Theater at 3 p.m. The cost is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children. USO will also provide free food and beverages during the movie.

The name and concept of Earth Day was the brainchild of John McConnell in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. It was first observed in San Francisco and other cities on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.
This day was later sanctioned in a proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations, where it is observed each year. About the same time, a separate Earth Day was founded by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970.
While this April 22 Earth Day focused on the United States, an organization started by Denis Hayes took it international in 1990, and there are now events in 141 nations.
