FORT STEWART, Ga. - With an alligator in hand -- literally -- and a cornucopia of food delicacies, the 2011 Community Showcase and Travel Show opened the doors to Club Stewart's Grand Ball Room, Sept. 15.
The mission was to provide information of activities and events to the community of Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.
The showcase welcomed the community to learn about Family-oriented activities, vacation spots, restaurants, amusement parks and travel opportunities -- just to name a few. Approximately 70 organizations extending from coastal Georgia to Florida and South Carolina exhibited during the show.
Of the numerous exhibits, Orlando, Fla.'s, Gatorland featured a three-year-old alligator. Guests were invited to handle the young gator, which included Garrison Commander Col. Kevin Milton.
For first-time visitor Cynthia Threat, a Fort Stewart Child, Youth and School Services program assistant, the showcase sparked her curiosity.
Threat said that her curiosity is what brought her to the showcase. "I've never been to one before, so it was exciting just to be here," she said.
Along with taking a small trip to the showcase, Threat won the first door prize as well.
"I was excited, but I was shocked at first," she said. "I was like "they called my name."
When asked which exhibit she enjoyed the most, she responded the Club Stewart catering service. She said she liked how the crepes were made before one's eyes and that one could choose any topping.
Exhibitor Katrina Sage, Program Assistant for the Hinesville Downtown Development Authority, shared that she would like the community to learn what Hinesville has to offer.
"We just really want everyone to come downtown and experience all the growth that it has had," Sage said. "We have new businesses coming. We have a candy kitchen that is getting ready to open up. The farmer's market has grown quite a bit thanks to our sponsor the Farm Bureau for Liberty County. . . We want the showcase to show everybody the great things that downtown have to offer such as our Farmer's Market and our events such as the Scarecrow Show, Lunchtime [Concert] in the Park and Second Thursday Night ."
Before the showcase, the 2011 Regional Information Sharing Forum took place, in which activities, events and upcoming developments were discussed amongst community leaders.
