MANNHEIM, Germany-- It’s not every day that you get the chance to hear a young Soldier singing his heart out to Marc Anthony’s hit single “You Sang To Me.”

But on May 24, Cpl. Xavier Santiago belted it out over the airwaves when the U.S. Army Europe Soldiers Chorus paid a visit to the AFN Studio on Coleman Barracks for an interview with Staff Sgt. Victor Gardner, host of the AFN PowerNet evening talk show.

The members of the chorus were given three minutes to pick three songs to perform on the radio, and Cpl. Santiago’s sultry voice was selected to kick off the program.

The chorus spent 45 minutes in the studio discussing who they are and what they do in hopes to recruit new members, as well as to promote their upcoming performance at the U.S. Army Garrison Baden-Württemberg July Fourth Celebration at Patrick Henry Village in Heidelberg.

“It’s not just about being able to sing,” said Capt. Bryan Ralls, Executive Officer of the USAREUR

Soldiers’ Chorus. “It’s about being musical ambassadors for the U.S. Army in Europe.”

The chorus is sent throughout Europe to perform for high-profile dignitaries and the local public.

They recently returned from a trip to Serbia and are gearing up for a performance in London for

British royalty. Currently, the chorus is seeking new members to fill slots for vocalists, keyboardist, guitarist, choreographer and sound engineer. Staff Sergeant and below in every Military Occupational Specialty are eligible to audition.

Those interested should contact Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Madison at civ. 0172-512-1829.

“We’ve got everything from an 11 Bravo [Infantryman], to a 42 Alpha [Human Resources Specialist], and even a 15 Quebec [Air Traffic Controller],”said Staff Sgt. Lucky Tagaloa, the USAREUR Chorus recruitment noncommissioned officer. “As long as you’re in the Army, you’re a good Soldier and have musical talent, we want you to audition. And if you want to see what we can do, definitely check us out on the 4th of July [in Heidelberg],” Tagaloa added.

At last year's celebration, the chorus had a crowd of over 5,000 jumping, dancing and cheering

during their rendition of the hit pop song “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas.

“If you thought last year was good, this year we’re going to do it up bigger and better,” said

Ralls, with a roundtable of nods by fellow chorus members who were excited about performing for their friends and families.

The Heidelberg Fourth of July Celebration will take place behind the library on Patrick Henry

Village starting at 4 p.m. It will feature rock band Crazy, Jimmy’s Souliquity and top off with an hour-long performance by the USAREUR Chorus. Food, rides, kids’ games, beach volleyball and huge prize giveaways will also be part of the festivities that end at dusk with fi reworks.

The event is hosted by U.S. Army Garrison Baden-Württemberg Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and is sponsored by TKS, Corona, Bavarian Motor Cars, Pentagon Car Sales, Embry Riddle University, Service Credit Union, Volvo, Mirascon Auto Insurance and Mercedes-Benz.
