FORWARD OPERATING BASE PASAB, Afghanistan " Sergeant Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III visited 3rd Brigade Combat Team Soldiers here May 25.
Chandler has served as the 14th sergeant major of the Army since March 1.
In that role, it is one of his responsibilities to make sure Soldiers are doing well, while in garrison and while deployed.
While on FOB Pasab, Spartan Soldiers and civilians attached to the brigade demonstrated and explained several of the new technologies being used by deployed Soldiers.
Chandler then received a briefing on the brigade’s mission and success so far in Kandahar Pro-vince.
“Our mission in Afghanistan is to separate the enemy from the people, to help the government, and to give people hope,” said Command Sgt. Maj. James Carabello, command sergeant major of 3rd BCT.
Chandler awarded eight Spartan Soldiers their Combat Action Badges that they recently had earned during their deployment to Kandahar Province.
Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Greca, command sergeant major of the 10th Mountain Division (LI), also gave Division Command Challenge coins to several Spartan Soldiers for their exceptional performance while deployed.
“I think they are doing amazing things; I have never been so proud of a group of Soldiers before,” said Carabello, of Soldiers in the Spartan Brigade.
After the awards ceremony, the sergeant major of the Army ate dinner with the Soldiers on Pasab. The Spartans had set up a barbecue and grilled burgers and hot dogs. Everyone was invited to sit and eat with Chandler and to have a good time.
Spartan Soldiers take pride in everything they do " from the Soldiers on the front lines to the Soldiers taking care of the FOB " and that is what they demonstrated to Chandler.
“He saw very disciplined Soldiers " a brigade that went back to the basics, focused on discipline and standards,” said Carabello of Chandler’s visit to Pasab.
Before the awards ceremony, Chandler circulated through the battlefield throughout the day, visiting several other FOBs in Kandahar Province, where he spoke with Soldiers from several other units, ensuring they are operating and living at the highest standard.
