FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Wednesday evenings are livening up at the post Spiritual Life Center with the introduction of WOW-short for Worship on Wednesdays-a newly formatted praise and worship service.
The non-denominational Christian WOW, led by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Mickey Jett, replaces the longstanding Wednesday Night Live fellowship and Bible study program.
"WOW will be about growing in the Lord and maturing in the faith through the study of Paul's epistles. Presently, we are looking at two of the earliest epistles of Paul, first and second Thessalonians, which Paul wrote approximately five to eight months after his departing Thessalonica," Jett said.
"Paul, like a parent, was concerned about the newly established church in the Macedonian area.
"Therefore, WOW participants can learn about what the apostle felt was most important for them to know," he said.
Joining Jett in WOW praise and worship are Chaplain (Maj.) Mark Mitera and Chaplain (Maj.) Scott Crossfield.
"Part of the reason we have a Wednesday night program is to give our chapel congregation members an opportunity to have a mid-week worship experience to help them grow in their faith. In years past, Families would go to church Sunday morning, Sunday evening and Wednesday evening each week for worship and fellowship," Mitera said.
The Wednesday program is an attempt to get back to the roots of faith when many churches now only have a Sunday service, according to Mitera.
The fellowship service is about being a disciple, according to Jett.
"WOW is about getting to know each other and the Lord in unity and love. It is about praise and worship." Jett said.
In addition to the food, patrons can enjoy contemporary praise and worship music.
"We presently have two acoustic guitar players, and we invite others to join our praise team," Mitera said.
The chaplains hope to grow the attendance to the meeting.
"Right now we generally have 50 to 60 people attend each week, and are hoping to grow to about 100 people," Mitera said.
The chaplains invite anyone interested in growing spiritually to attend WOW.
"Come and grow with us, learn what the Bible says about how the church operated in an environment of conflict while being totally committed to the gospel. WOW will be about faith, fellowship, friendship and following Christ in a closer way," Jett said.
The WOW service is Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. with a fellowship meal provided by the chapel. At 6 p.m. there is 15 minutes of singing and prayer, followed by a 30-minute Bible study. The service concludes at 6:45 p.m.
A $3 donation per person or $8 donation per Family is requested to defray the cost of food. However if cost is an issue, guests can eat for free.
People who have musical talent and would like to participate with the praise team, can call Mitera at 255-3544.
