Next Monday marks the 25th Federal holiday recognizing one of America's greatest heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Let us celebrate the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to our Nation and commemorate the values he exemplified in his life and teachings -- courage, truth, respect, integrity, humility and service.

These same values are at the core of what the Army strives to cultivate in each and every Soldier and Civilian. They are also what makes the Army such an enduring and effective institution. As you enjoy this holiday, take a moment to remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and rededicate yourself to the values he espoused.

This special holiday is part of the President's national call to service initiative, United We Serve, calling on all Americans to provide solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. This is a great opportunity for you to honor Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community"

through service and community action to tackle social issues.

Let me take this opportunity to remind you to watch out for your own safety and for your family and friends. Be aware of your surroundings for potential danger. You are helping make Army installations stronger, more capable, and more effective in supporting Soldier and Family readiness. We need you back, alive and well.

Thank you once again for all your hard work in support of our Nation, Army, and the Installation Management Community. Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Support and Defend!
