The Jungle Cats Team II slipped past Rock Force 2-0 in an overtime penalty kick shootout during intramural soccer Monday at Doughboy Stadium.
Five minutes into the first half, Rock Force's Matt Apostol, of 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, scored to take a 1-0 lead. After a throw-in by Rock Force's Thomas Schlichter, Apostol headed the ball past the goalie increasing Rock Force's lead to 2-0.
Twenty minutes into the first half, The Jungle Cats Team II of 11th Engineer Battalion closed the gap, with
Jonathan Espino kicking a goal, trailing 2-1. Espino tied the score at 2-2 to end the first half.
Both teams battled back and forth until Rock Force's Apostol scored his second goal to lead 3-2.
The lead was short-lived as Espino scored his third goal to tie the game at 3, sending the teams into an overtime penalty kick shootout.
Jungle Cats goalie Jon Nardoni blocked shots from Rock Force, while the Jungle Cats scored on two shots from Richardo Ifill and Jason Dence to win the shootout 2-0.
Dence made the winning penalty kick.
"Getting the winning kick was exciting because it was my first goal, but all of the credit goes to our goalie," Dence said. "I only made one kick. He made five saves."
Ifill, team captain, said his team stepped up in the second half.
"It was a hard-fought game," he said. "At halftime, we came up with a different strategy, played harder defense and put more pressure on them. We took control of the game and forced penalty kicks."
Up next for Jungle Cats Team II is WHINSEC at 6 p.m. Monday while Rock Force will take on 1st Bn., 19th Inf. Regt. at 7:15 p.m. Both games are at Doughboy Stadium.
