Teenvenuti guides new-to-Vicenza students around downtown this summer
VICENZA, Italy — The Teenvenuti welcome program greets newcomer students with peer-led tours of the historic city center. This Child and Youth Service student-centered initiative has supported the Vicenza military community for over a decade.
This summer, newcomer students and Teenvenuti leaders endured the heat to explore what downtown Vicenza has to offer, stopping by landmarks, local shops and breaking for the fan-favorite of pizza lunch and gelato along the way.

With tours entirely organized by middle and high school student volunteers, Teenvenuti not only allows teens to catch a glimpse of the city, but it also gives opportunities for newcomers to plant the seeds of friendship, creating early connections with their community before starting somewhere new in the fall.
“It really makes a difference to see a familiar face in the hallway when you’re starting a new school where you don’t know anyone,” said Lilla Morris, executive board member on the Teenvenuti team and senior at Vicenza High School.

Reaching over 40% of the students new to Vicenza, Teenvenuti plays an important role in making kids, and their families, feel welcome to the Vicenza Community. The program benefits newcomers and Teenvenuti student-leaders alike.
"I’ve gotten more confident with public speaking," said Katherine Green, executive board member and senior at VHS, when reflecting on her experience. Most of these young volunteers took part in the program themselves when first arriving in Italy.
From creating personalized welcome packets for newcomer students, to leading parent huddles, these teenagers gain experience in leadership, communication and quick problem-solving skills.
“We all love Mrs. Potter because she gives us the opportunity to lead,” said Isabell Green, Teenvenuti leader and junior at VHS. Beth Potter, the school liaison officer, plays a central role in empowering young leaders’ voices to support their peers and wider community.
Aug. 13 marks the final tour of the summer, before the back-to-school season kicks off. As the new students prepare for the daunting task of starting a new school, they lean on the fact that they might see a friendly face in the classroom.
Through the Teenvenuti program, these young volunteers showcase some of the best the Vicenza Military Community has to offer.
