The Rodgers and Hammerstein Pulitzer Prize winning classic premiered on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 7, 1949. The musical, set during World War II in the South Pacific, became a huge success, running for almost five years and winning numerous Tony Awards, including all ten nominations it received.
"South Pacific" tells two intertwined love stories set on a South Pacific island during World War II, exploring romance, prejudice, and duty. The primary story focuses on Nellie Forbush, an American nurse, and Emile de Becque, a French plantation owner. The secondary story follows Lieutenant Joe Cable, a Marine, and Liat, a young Tonkinese woman, who also struggle with prejudice and societal expectations.
Homefront Players welcomes Matt Polson (Emile de Becque), Gabrielle Bergeret (Bloody Mary), and Shinji Elspeth Oh (Liat) for their Beaty Theater premiere. Returning to the Beaty Stage are Mara Barrett (Nellie Forbush), Josh Louis Smith (Lt. Joe Cable), and Matthew Barger (Luther Billis) to complete the 24-member cast of both new faces and Homefront veterans.
Director Frank Foster, Musical Director Travis West, and Choreographer Valerie Calogerakis, lead the creative team. It also includes Costume Designer Mark Souza, Lighting Designer Tristan Ketchum, Sound Designer Dew Redling and Properties Designers Kim and Lynn Hockaday. The stage manager is Kathy Dowling.
South Pacific is a show for audiences of all ages with Rodgers and Hammerstein classics such as "Some Enchanted Evening," "There is Nothing Like a Dame," "Bali Ha'i," "Younger Than Springtime," and "This Nearly Was Mine."
