FORT BELVOIR, Va. - As part of a four-day visit to the National Capital Area to tour Departments of Defense and Homeland Security organizations and meet with officials, the Argentine Minister of Defense Dr. Nilda GarrAfA also met with Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody here Sept. 8.

Both women are "firsts" in their field. Dunwoody is the U.S. military's first female four-star general and first woman to lead the U.S. Army Materiel Command as its commanding general. GarrAfA became the first female Argentine Minister of Defense in December 2005.

The visit included an office meeting among Dunwoody; GarrAfA; Kathryn Condon, AMC's executive deputy to the commanding general; and other key military and civilian leaders in GarrAfA's staff, to discuss logistics transformation and gender equality in the Armed Forces.

Prior to meeting with Dunwoody, GarrAfA attended a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and met with Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates.

While the office visit was taking place, Gerald O'Keefe, AMC's Deputy G-3/5 for strategy and concepts, presented a short video on AMC's organization and mission to the remainder of the visitors in the group and led them through a short tour of the AMC Tech Gallery which showcases research and development efforts across the command.

The AMC visit ended with a luncheon at the Fort Belvoir Officers' Club before GarrAfA and her party headed to the Defense Acquisition University for a tour and presentations.
