FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. – A new sign constructed for the Van Deman Gate here was unveiled by the garrison command team Feb. 22, 2021. The Van Deman Gate is the only entrance operational 24 hours a day, seven days of the week on the installation. The new sign on the corner of Hatfield Road and Buffalo Soldier Trail is a landmark featuring a solar panel to light the sign after dark. The installation Directorate of Public Works’ Master Planning Division and Engineering Division collaborated on the engineering, design and construction efforts which began Jan. 4, 2021. The sign project began about five years ago by now-retired Maj. Gen. Robert Walters, former commanding general of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence & Fort Huachuca.
