Secretary of the Army Dr. Mark T. Esper and Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Mark A. Milley are deeply saddened by the news of Senator John McCain's passing.

Throughout his life, Senator McCain was an unflagging supporter of our military, especially our Soldiers, Veterans, and their Families. In a lifetime of public service that extended from his decorated military service in Vietnam to his distinguished tenure as the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator McCain was a dedicated and heroic leader for our country. He was a staunch advocate for military readiness to meet today's threats, and for modernization of our Armed Forces to meet the challenges of tomorrow. The entire U.S. Army remains appreciative of his service, dedication, and leadership and mourns his passing. We extend our deepest condolences to the McCain family.
