As the next slide pops up on the large screen in C.C. Pinckney Elementary School's auditorium, a
picture of a man appears in front of the 3rd graders seated quietly in the chairs.
"Do you guys know who this is?" asked one of the guest speaker.
"Donald Trump," they shouted in unison.
C.C. Pinckney celebrated Law Day May 1. Law Day is a national day to celebrate the rule of law and its contributions to the freedoms Americans enjoy.
This year's theme was "The 14th Amendment: Transforming American democracy." The 14th Amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws.
Students created posters explaining why democracy is important to them. There were three winners
from each grade level.
Lawyers from the South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division came to speak to the students about the different branches of the government and what they do.
The students also watched how Fort Jackson's K-9 unit utilize their dogs to help catch criminals.
"These dogs are not like your dogs at home," said Sgt. Josh Pearce.
Before the law day celebration, Army Training Center Chief of Staff Col. Morris Goins got the students excited to learn about the government.
"Your future is in the palm of your hand," he told them. "Go get it."
